It’s the coldest morning of the year, the house is freezing and the boiler has stopped with a fault light showing. If you have a condensing boiler, a frozen condensate pipe is one of the most common reasons. The good news is that you can often sort it yourself: find the pipe, thaw it with warm (not boiling) water, then reset the boiler. If it won’t restart, or you can’t reach the pipe safely, our boiler repairs team can help. We cover homes right across North Somerset, including Yatton and Long Ashton.

What the condensate pipe does
Modern condensing boilers recover extra heat from their flue gases. That process creates acidic water, called condensate, which drains away through a plastic pipe, usually white or grey. In many homes that pipe runs through an outside wall and down into a drain.
When temperatures stay below freezing, the water in the outside section can freeze and block the pipe. The condensate has nowhere to go, so the boiler shuts itself down to stay safe.
Signs your condensate pipe has frozen
- The boiler has stopped and is showing a fault code or warning light
- You can hear a gurgling or bubbling sound from the boiler or the pipe
- It’s been below freezing for a day or more
- The boiler restarts briefly after a reset, then locks out again
Your boiler manual will list the fault codes for your model.
How to thaw it safely
1. Find the pipe
Follow the plastic pipe from the bottom of the boiler to where it leaves the house. The part most likely to be frozen is outside, often at a bend or at the open end over the drain.
2. Use warm water, not boiling
Pour warm water from a kettle that has cooled for a while, or a watering can, slowly along the pipe. You can also hold a hot water bottle or a warm wrap against it. Don’t use boiling water, as it can crack the pipe, and take care not to spill water on the ground where it could freeze and make it slippery.
3. Reset the boiler
Once the pipe is clear, reset the boiler following the instructions in your manual. It may take a few minutes to fire up again.
Only thaw pipes you can reach from the ground. If the pipe is high up the wall, don’t use a ladder in icy conditions. Give us a call instead.
Stopping it happening again
If your condensate pipe freezes most winters, it’s worth having it looked at. Options can include:
- Insulating the outside section with waterproof pipe lagging
- Fitting a wider pipe outside, which is less likely to block with ice
- Shortening or rerouting the run so less of it is exposed to the cold
- Taking the condensate into an internal drain where the layout allows
The right fix depends on where your boiler is and how the pipe runs, so it’s best decided on site.
Cold snaps in North Somerset
Homes on higher ground and in exposed spots, such as properties looking out over the Severn Estuary around Clevedon and Portishead, or rural homes around Wrington and Chew Magna, can be hit hardest by freezing winds. Long outdoor pipe runs on the side of bungalows and extensions are especially prone. If you’re getting your home ready for winter, our guide to preparing your home for winter covers other checks worth making.
Frequently asked questions
Why has my boiler stopped working in cold weather?
A frozen condensate pipe is one of the most common reasons a condensing boiler stops in freezing weather. Ice blocks the pipe, the condensate can’t drain, and the boiler shuts down to protect itself. Other causes include low boiler pressure, so check the pressure gauge too.
Can I use boiling water to thaw my condensate pipe?
No. Boiling water can crack or damage the plastic pipe. Use warm water that has cooled for a while, or a hot water bottle held against the frozen section. Pour slowly and take care not to create ice on the path below.
Is it safe to keep resetting my boiler?
If the pipe is still frozen, the boiler will usually just lock out again. Clear the blockage first, then reset once. If it keeps locking out after the pipe is clear, stop and ask a Gas Safe registered engineer to check it.
Boiler still not working?
If you’ve thawed the pipe and the boiler still won’t fire up, give us a call on 01275 846 437 or drop us a message and we’ll get your heating back on.
